If you've made your own placemats, mug rugs & coasters, you don't usually stop at just one.  So you know the hassle of creating & using a paper or plastic template for the 1^st then using it again for the next … and so on.  The pattern doesn’t look anything like it originally did!  

Like all of my templates, my No Slip backing is a much better option. It makes the cutting process quick, easy– & most importantly – accurate! These beat paper & plastic hands down any day~

Originally, I had the Round Table Wedge Bottom Placemat suggested my Mary Jo Smith. It is the perfect size and shape for those round tables where rectangles just don't work!

But I had a request for a larger Round Table Placemat and, just recently, a request for the Angled Corners Placemat - (thanks, Diana!)

While designing, I thought it would be fun to make a matching Mug Rug and Coaster.  Then I grabbed some of my purchased placemats and decided to design another template with Rounded Corners and a matching Mug Rug and Coaster!

Of course, I had to add a Mug Rug and Coaster in the style of the Rounded Table Wedge Bottom Placemat.  I love how one idea leads to another!!!

So now, you have 3 choices of Placemats with optional matching Mug Rugs and Coasters.  The styles: 

1. Round Table Wedge Bottom Style
2. Angled Corners Style
3. Rounded Corners Style

Not familiar with a Mug Rug? It’s larger than a coaster; smaller than a Placemat.  It’s perfect to hold a drink & a snack!  Whether you make a Mug Rug, Coaster or Placemat, the method is fairly similar. 

What makes the sewing process different is the interfacing you choose & the way you close off the turning area.  In my video, rather than show the sewing process, I share a few tips & suggestions on the latter two.

How to choose which style -

Do you have a round table? Then you know how difficult it is to find placemats to fit! Mary Jo Smith even sent me a finished sample to share as well as pics of 4 placemats on her round table!

The Round Table Placemat has a smaller top than bottom. This can easily fit around the table.  Depending on the diameter of your table, you might fit 4 or 5 place mats!  It’s now in 2 sizes – my original 16 ¼” W x 13 ¾” T or the Large 18 ½” W x 16” T.

Or you can choose based on the look of the Rounded Corners or Angled Corners.

With any of the 3 Placemat Templates, you can swap out batting or fleece for Insul-Brite or Iron-Quick on the back to make a plate charger or a hot plate.  

If you’re going to buy a Mug Rug or Coaster and a Placemat, I’d stick with the same style as the Placemat so you can use them together.

All of these are fun to play with fabrics.  Choose kitchen or food themes or make them from holiday fabrics. You could do Christmas on one side and Thanksgiving on the back!

Or choose fabrics based on each person's interest.  Nobody said that they all have to match!  Mug Rugs and Coasters both make great gifts and a scrapbusters, too! 

All of these templates lend themselves to other projects so I know some of you will be thinking outside the box like Jessica Page.  Her kids love aprons, especially with zippered pockets.  Check out the aprons perfect for both adults and kids!

Then you'll see her travel case made with the template.  It's the perfect size to hold a small cutting mat, threads and more.

Whip up this cute tote using the Round Table Wedge Bottom Placemat Template.  Keep it in your car to grab whatever needs to go from house to car, car to house.

The Round Table Wedge Bottom shape lends itself towards a nice sized purse with a wide opening. Or flip it with the wide part on the bottom and add darts.

You'll see a placemat made out of a tea towel using the Round Table Placemat.  Most tea towels are just a hair too narrow, so I used my Surgical Seam Ripper to take out the stitches on the sides and bottom to give me just a bit more fabric to go in the seam allowances. Then you can fussy cut to have the saying centered on the placemat.  I love using tea towels for other than towels!
